Join the Choir

Anyone who LOVES to sing is welcome to join the Malaspina Choir. New singers are invited to join the choir in September and January of each performing season. This year we are splitting our choir fees into two components.  A nominal $10 membership fee is required of everyone who wishes to support the choir and be a voting member, whether or not you plan to sing. Those who wish to actively participate in rehearsals, workshops and performances will pay an additional activity fee of $110 per term for most individuals to cover administrative expenses

To register for the choir this fall, you must complete a registration form and deliver it and your fee to the choir by doing one of the following:

  • Place your form and fee in an envelope and mail it to the choir at P.O. Box 1175, Stn A, Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 6E7
  • Place your form and fee in an envelope and drop it off at Strain and Company 101-360 Selby Street Nanaimo.  There is a mail slot for after-hours drop off.
  • Place your form and fee in an envelope and bring it to the first rehearsal

Our first rehearsal is planned for September 15, 7-8:30 pm at our new rehearsal venue - St. Andrew's United Church, 311 Fitzwilliam St., Nanaimo.

The Choir is open to members of the community and also to students at Vancouver Island University. This fall, VIU students can join the choir as a community member but will not be able to register through VIU courses (MUSC 151, 152, 251, 252, 351, 352, 451, 452 - see the VIU Music Department Website for more information).

Singing during COVID

There is much ongoing resarch about COVID and singing; our knowledge is constantly changing. The current best practices for indoor rehearsals include physical distancing; wearing masks when not singing; not singing for more than 30 minutes total during a rehearsal session - which includes splitting that total time into shorter blocks, allowing for adequate ventilation of the space; and keeping high touch surfaces sanitized.  We will be keeping track of those who attend rehearsals so that contact tracing can be facilitated if needed;  we expect that anyone who is feeling ill will not attend a face-to-face rehearsal; we expect all those present to respect the constraints imposed by needing to stay safe.

We will be rehearsing in the main sanctuary at St Andrews, a space that can hold over 300 people in normal circumstances. This will allow for a lot of physical distancing for what we expect to be a smaller group of active singers than before. More detail about how rehearsals will be managed will be posted as it becomes available.

Expectations of Malaspina Choir Members

Members are expected to attend all rehearsals unless they are ill. Participation at all pre-concert rehearsals, performances and workshops is mandatory unless the individual’s absence has been approved by our Director.

We all join the Malaspina Choir because we love to sing and we want to enjoy ourselves doing so. We can all help to make this happen by taking responsibility for our own development as a musician, coming to rehearsals prepared and willing to learn, listening carefully and critically as you and others sing or work on skill-building;  singing when your section is asked to sing and remaining silent when you are not singing. Be attentive, be on time. Work together - the more together we are, the better we are.
