Malaspina Choir presents

Choral Celebration: Vivaldi to Whitacre

Malaspina Choir and the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Lionel Tanod

Date: Sunday, November 17, 2019

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Venue: St. Andrew's United Church, 311 Fitzwilliam St., Nanaimo

Malaspina Choir begins the celebration of its 50th season with a concert featuring five centuries of choral music, the earliest composed in the 16th century, Orlando di Lasso’s Echo Song, and the most recent, Chilcott’s Bird of Dawning (2013).

As well as time, the music spans genres: sacred pieces from Vivaldi, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Rossini; musical jokes (di Lasso) and tango/jazz (Paizzolla); anti-war (Jenkins) and celebration of the Saviour’s birth (Chilcott); lullaby (Whitacre) and drinking songs (Hatfield).  Two of the sacred works (the Vivaldi and Mozart) were written to be sung at Vespers, the only service where the Church allowed concert music, while Vivaldi’s Magnificat and Mendelssohn’s Ave Maria are dedicated to Mary.

Several works in the program were composed to meet the requests of specific groups. Thus much of Vivaldi’s music was composed for performance by the female students at the Pièta convent, Hatfield wrote God-Bless Wassail for the Amabile Boys’ Choir and Jenkin’s Benedictus comes from a longer work requested by the Royal Armouries Museum for the Millennium, dedicated to victims of the Kosovo crisis

The mix of music in this performance highlights the versatility of the Malaspina Choir, and includes favourites from our repertoire as well as ones new to the choir. We’ve invited our frequent collaborator, the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra, to be part of the performance, and we’ll be featuring choir members as soloists. This is an exciting celebration of the choir’s half-century of bringing the best in the choral repertoire to Nanaimo and Vancouver Island.  Come join us for this very special occasion!
