Fiona Blackburn Nov 2020  From Fiona– a message from our Artistic Director, Fiona Blackburn

Dear Malaspina Choir Singers & Friends,

The anticipated ‘second wave’ of the Covid-19 pandemic is upon us. With it come all the accompanying, necessary protocols as stipulated by our health professionals. The most important thing in our lives – the health and well-being of ourselves and our loved ones – must take precedence over anything else.

We always knew that the unpredictability of the pandemic situation meant that we would be making decisions from week-to-week. We held six wonderful sessions in September and October, our music was starting to come together, and we were getting to know each other; however, for the time being, we are suspending in-person rehearsals. While we all love to sing (for some of us, it really is an essential part of our lives!), we know that we will have to wait for another bit of time to pass before we can gather in-person once more. Do not worry, nothing that we accomplished this fall will be lost. We will start right up where we left off, when it is safe.

In the meanwhile, we have set up channels of communication so that we can stay in touch with each other. You may choose to enjoy all, some or none of the following. Alumni are especially welcome to stay in touch, as well as active members:

  • 1st Monday of the month: our new Monthly Newsletter
    • The first edition was sent to all singers of the past two seasons. Please contact us if we missed you on our communication list
    • We are collecting your ideas for a suitable title
    • Each edition will also be posted in the Members’ Section of the website
  • 2nd, 3rd & 4th Mondays of the month: a short version of my usual Weekly ‘Notes’ with any interesting tidbits of information I come across during the week
    • I encourage anyone who has seen an inspiring, entertaining or downright fun & silly video to send it along to be included in the Weekly ‘Notes’
  • 2nd Tuesday of the month: 7:00pm zoom social at our regular rehearsal time
    • We had our first social gathering on November 10th and it was a great hour of getting to know each other, including a ‘pet and grandchild’ parade, and a very interesting discussion about ideas for Malapina’s future
    • If you wish to join us on December 8th at 7:00 – contact our lovely ‘Social Convener’ Karen. Her email address will be found in the monthly or weekly communications.

OUR FUTURE:

During this time of suspended rehearsals, and in order that we can relaunch the choir as soon as it is safe, we will focus our energies on the following - our:

  • Gala 50+ Anniversary Concert – with recognition of all previous directors
  • Vision & Mission Statements – what do we ‘stand’ for and where are we going?
  • One, Three & Five Year Plans – how are we going to fulfill our vision & mission
  • Musical Projects – big, small, intriguing, collaborative and plenty of ‘musical firsts’ for Nanaimo and beyond.

Please check this website or subscribe to our newsletters for updates.

Stay safe and well, everyone! Fiona
